Why Certain Cancers Are Becoming More Common

Whether it affects a colleague, neighbor, or loved one, cancer is so common such that nearly everyone knows of an individual diagnosed with it. While scientists continue to discover new treatments, cancer continues to affect the lives of millions every year. Sadly, certain cancer types are becoming more prevalent, and cancer experts are making efforts to establish the cause for this and possible treatment options.

Studies reveal that some types of cancer have been on the rise for the past few years and the three most prevalent ones include thyroid cancer, skin melanoma, and liver cancer.

The possible causes for the prevalence

According to World Health Organization (WHO) and cancer experts, the increase in the three cancer types is caused by behavioral and dietary factors, including:

  • Lack of physical activity
  • High body mass index
  • Alcohol use
  • Tobacco use
  • Low intake of vegetables and fruits
  • Eating of more processed food

While certain cancers continue to increase, in the U.S., the overall rate of cancer death has reduced since the 1990s. For instance, between 2006 and 2015, death rates reduced by 1.4%  per year in women and 1.8% in men, as reported by SEER Cancer Statistics Review. Wrong lifestyle choices are connected with the increased cancer risks, as does aging. However, medical advancement has helped to lower death rate overall.

Reducing the cancer risk

Liver cirrhosis is liver cancer’s main risk, and it has three major sources: alcohol, C virus infection, and fatty liver disease. To reduce the risk associated with liver cirrhosis, people should reduce alcohol intake, optimize the control of diabetes, and maintain a good lifestyle. To prevent skin melanoma, it’s important to limit sun exposure and use sunscreen properly, particularly for those with a fair skin.

Being diagnosed with any cancer type can shock anyone, and it’s never enough to provide the patient with drugs. It’s paramount a cancer clinic that provides a holistic treatment-body soul, and mind-and also cares for the patient’s family members.
